Forky’s eyes still had to convey emotion, and, as Moyer continues they “had to be believable. Forky is also way more detailed than some of the other toys in Bonnie's bedroom, including pipe cleaners, glitter glue, googly eyes, popsicle sticks, soft clay, crayon marks, and stickers.Ī conscious decision was also made regarding Forky’s eyebrows, and the Toy Story team decided those weren't necessary (because they’d probably be terrifying). “Forky had to look like a six-year-old kid's creation and also had to hold up as an appealing main character with the rest of the toy story characters,” Robert Moyer, the supervising technical director explained. This was a challenge for those working on Toy Story 4, not just because of Forky’s overall story in the movie, but also because he couldn’t necessarily look like a real toy. It's going to be another thing to convince Forky he's alive. It was one thing to convince Buzz he was a toy. One day he’s just being used to eat soup and salad and then BAM, he’s got conscious thinking. Buzz is a toy, so he always knew he was sentient. However, he was always programmed with those thoughts and ideas in his head he just had to get over the hump of learning he’s not actually traveling into space and can’t fly on his own. Yes, Buzz Lightyear was certainly faced with these same tough questions back in the original Toy Story, when he learned he was not a space ranger.
Journalists got to see roughly 20 minutes of the movie, and one early scene showed Forky constantly trying to throw himself back into the trash because that’s what he believes he is: Trash. He doesn’t know what he’s doing here, and he doesn’t want to be here. What makes Forky different from everyone else we’ve ever met in this world is the fact that he’s not a toy he’s a fork and a spoon combined. Toy Story 4 sees the return of all our favorite characters, and some new ones along the way, one of which is of course Forky.
